The goal of the Watch:Jerusalem Bookstore is to bring together an eclectic but focused group of books for the reader of Watch:Jerusalem newsletter. Inclusion in the listing does not imply endorsement of that book's message or author(s) by the editor of W:J, but rather an indication that this is a book likely to be a player in the "open market" of ideas. Suggestions for inclusion in the book store are very welcome.

JESUS AND 1ST CENTURY CHRISTIANITY
Editor's Pick
Jesus
by David Flusser
"Here is a remarkable book filled with profound insights on Jesus and His Jewish world.... Christians will be particularly enlightened and challenged by Professor Flusser's Jewish perspective on Jesus. Every serious student of the Bible can profit immensely from reading this book for it contains many fresh angles from which to ponder anew one of the enduring questions of the ages, 'Who was Jesus of Nazareth?' " --Marvin Wilson

Paul the Jewish Theologian: A Pharisee Among Christians, Jews, and Gentiles
by Brad H. Young
Read more about this title...
"Paul the Jewish Theologian reveals Saul of Tarsus as a man who, though rejected in the synagogue, never truly left Judaism. Author Young disagrees with long held notions that Hellenism was the context which most influenced Paul's communication of the Gospel. This skewed notion has led to widely divergent interpretations of Paul's writings. Only in rightly aligning Paul as rooted in his Jewishness and training as a Pharisee can he be correctly interpreted. Young asserts that Paul's view of the Torah was always positive, and he separates Jesus' mission among the Jews from Paul's call to the Gentiles." --Amazon.com synopsis

Jesus the Jewish Theologian
by Brad H. Young
Read more about this title...
"Jesus the Jewish Theologian establishes Jesus firmly within the context of first-century Judaism and shows how understanding Jesus' Jewishness is crucial for interpreting the New Testament and for understanding the nature of Christian faith." --Amazon.com synopsis

Jesus the Jew: A Historian's Reading of the Gospels
by Geza Vermes
"Vermes [a Jewish-born Hungarian], now emeritus professor of Jewish studies at Oxford, grew up, knowing nothing of Judaism, in prewar provincial Hungary. His family converted to Christianity in 1930, when he was 6. In 1942, at the age of 18, he decided to be a Catholic priest. Two years later, his family was deported and murdered, but he survived the Holocaust because a bishop hid him. After the war, Vermes found himself strangely drawn to the Hebrew Bible and Jewish subjects. He taught himself to read Hebrew, and became obsessed with the newly discovered Dead Sea Scrolls (his book on the subject, The Dead Sea Scrolls in English has sold some 300,000 copies), which in turn led him to 1st-century Judasim and the New Testment." --from "A Jew for the 'Real' Jesus" by David Winner, The Jerusalem Report, August 17, 1998
The Religion of Jesus the Jew
by Geza Vermes
"In three key books, starting with Jesus the Jew [see above] and continuing with Jesus and the World of Judaism [out of print], Vermes developed his thesis that the historical -- and thoroughly Jewish -- Jesus would have been baffled by such key Christian concepts as his own divinity and resurrection, the virgin birth and the holy Trinity. In The Religion of Jesus the Jew he concluded: 'The religion of Jesus and Christianity are so basically different inform, purpose and orientation that it would be historically unsafe to derive the latter directly from the former.'" --from "A Jew for the 'Real' Jesus" by David Winner, The Jerusalem Report, August 17, 1998
